This year, the TV ratings for the Stanley Cup Finals are the lowest that they've ever been. EVER. I'm trying to think of why this might be, and I think my opinion may be colored by the fact that I'm a hockey fan through and through, and I've been watching every game intently. Well here are the reasons I can think of:
1. No one gives a shit about either the Jersey Devils or the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim except their fans. At least when Detroit or Colorado was in the finals, you had a chance to look at greatness. People see the Devils vs. the Mighty Ducks and they think of Emilio Estevez.
2. Hockey is boring on TV, unless you really understand the game. And even then it can be a little boring for the occasional fan. Only hardcore hockey geeks like myself really take an interest in watching games on TV if our team isn't playing.
3. Of the four major professional sports, hockey is the least popular. Probably, in order of preference, they go Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey. But hockey is a distant fourth. And even the NBA Finals ratings are down this year, mostly because no one gives a shit about San Antonio and Jersey.
4. Secretly, people want Jersey to fail. New Jersey is the butt of every joke. And even people from South Jersey don't want those stinkin' Devils to win, because most of us down below are Flyers fans.
So those are my four theories on why Stanley Cup Finals ratings are so low. Also, ESPN/ABC coverage of Hockey sucks. And I can't stand Brian Engblom and Chris Berman. I want Engblom to shave that stupid fucking mullet, and Chris Berman looks more like a football announcer.
