There were a couple of outstanding performances yesterday by Philadelphia atheletes. First, of course, was Kevin Millwood's no-hitter pitched against the San Francisco Giants, the first no-hitter thrown by a Phillies pitcher since 1993. Millwood threw three walks and ten strikeouts, and only pitched to 30 batters in nine innings of shutout play. The Phillies only scored one run in the first inning, but that proved to be enough.
Second on the plate is Roman Cechmanek's stellar performance as he shut out those Ottawa Senators. The Cech basically stood on his head to make some of those saves, keeping his team in the running of a game that was mostly 1-0 throughout until Mark Recchi scored his seventh goal of the post-season, making the final score 2-0. And even though the Flyers dominated throughout the game, it was Cechmanek who really took the game on his shoulders to give them the win. Some of the saves he made were nothing short of spectacular, including a time when he turned away a barrage of shots and covered the puck as it was headed through the crease in the third period. The Flyers have needed a goaltender that they could rely on in the playoffs, and I think that with this one shutout performance, they will go on to beat the Sens and advance to the Eastern Conference finals.
What a day to be a Philadelphia sports fan! ;D
