Andy Germak: Biography: Having grown-up in six different states, lived in Italy, and explored the United States, Europe and South America, Andy Germak (pronounced Ger' mack as in Gertrude) presents a well-traveled perspective in his songs. Time Out New York remarks, "Andy Germak's angsty, Counting Crows-esque songwriting is earnest and thoughtful and displays definite potential." His songs feature intelligent, often social/political, lyrics set to roots-rock musical hooks reminiscent of Counting Crows, REM, Freedy Johnston, Elvis Costello, Ryan Adams, Shawn Mullins, and Bruce Springsteen.
Germak self-released his first full-length CD, Color Through the Smoke , in January 2000. The album presents a thought provoking collection of meditations on an unpredictable world. Rolling Stone writes, "tasteful strings and a first-rate melody set 'Fireworks Over Ithaca' apart from standard singer-songwriter fare." All Music Guide (AMG) comments, "a distinct form of 21st century protest music." And, Relix remarks, "a sense of maturity and depth that belies his age."
In 2001, Germak showcased at House Of Blues (Cambridge MA) as part of the 2001 NEMO Music Conference . In February 2002, he appeared at The Bottom Line (New York NY) as part of the Smithsonian Folkways 20th Anniversary Fast Folk Concert.
In May 2002, Germak's song, " Spoonfed," was released on the benefit album, Vigil , a CD compiled by Suzanne Vega with proceeds benefiting the families of victims of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. In support of Vigil , Germak opened for Suzanne Vega at The Library of Congress (Washington DC) on September 13th, 2002. The event was part of the "Summon the Heroes" concert series in remembrance of 9-11.
Currently, Germak maintains a steady tour schedule, including a recent pub tour of Ireland in support of his limited CD release, Communications . He also showcased for the second year in a row at the Dewey Beach Music Festival 2003 (Dewey Beach DE).
Germak released a new EP, Anybody Ever Really Know Anyone? , in March 2004 and is presently on tour alternating between full-band shows and intimate acoustic sets.
Germak states, "I go wherever my van can get me," referring to his love for the road and bringing his music to new people and places. Germak's tour details are updated daily on his website, www.andygermak.com .
