Poppy Z. Brite.
I admit, I was first turned on to Poppy Z. in a pictorial she shot for a punk skin mag called Rage. She was gothed out, naked except for a long fur coat and a pair of Doc Martins, and lounging around in a New Orleans cemetery. She also wrote some dialog for her pictorial that piqued my interest (other parts of me were already piqued). So I went to the local bookstore and purchased her latest novel at the time, Exquisite Corpse. I was hooked instantly.
Poppy's writing is hypnotic, fluid and dreamy, gorey and erotic. It can best be described as "Gothic." Her subject matter is stuff of nightmares and reality. The people in her novels are very tangible, and the situations, although surreal, are not impossible as with much of the genre's offerings. But it is her erotic subject matter that sets her apart. In the article in Rage, she wrote that she writes about men in homosexual encounters, in graphic detail, because that is what turns her on. And when she writes on this subject matter, it's very VERY graphic. She obviously meant what she said about typing with one hand...
If you haven't already, if you get a chance, check out some of Poppy's work. I recommend starting with Wormwood, which is a collection of short stories, and one which contains the first story about Steve and Ghost, two recurring characters in later novels such as Drawing Blood and Lost Souls.

I'll send you my extra copy of Drawing Blood. Seems someone bought me a duplicate for Christmas. Heh, Poppy Z. book for Christmas, how ironic. Or is it sarcastic? I never know. I just use such terms to apear intelligent. And besides, no one reads this drivel anyway. Bla and bla bla but bla and bla. And I can say anything and no one is reading this so no one will know what I'm saying, because no one reads this.

yes, i was very nice and bought him a first edition copy of drawing blood, then mailed it to poppy, who signed it for him... what an awesome ass present, huh? i have read plastic jesus which i would consider to be very tame in comparison to exsquisite courpse. that one is my personal favorite... simply because i haven't been able to get into any of her other stuff. maybe i'm just not "mature" enough to handle it... or i just have a buttload of books to read and i keep forgetting she's sitting up on the shelf, too...

Oh yeah, I remember that... I knew I recognized the name from somewhere. My memory is *teh* suck. I've been putting off reading so many books for months now.. I have an entire bookshelf, if not more, that I need to read... it's true, the internet and tellevision do make us dumber.

And of course, my biggest problem is that we keep the TV remote on the bookshelf. So I go to grab a book, see the remote, pick it up... you can visualize the rest of the story yourself. I really should read more, but there's so many quality programs on, like Roseanne and Full House reruns.
God, I'm pathetic. ;D

I don't even like most of the shit that's on TV (especially ghetto Monday on UPN), but I always have it on. Always. I hate myself so much.

HEY! don't forget [glow=orange,2,300]FRIENDS[/glow]. See, I said "Quality" reruns and then said Roseanne and Full House. Note the irony. Or is it sarcasm? I don't know. I'm so fucking fried. I hate being on Helpdesk.
