When MTV first went on the air, I was watching. Believe it or not. I wasn't looking for it, I just accidentally caught it in its first minutes. I was 12 at the time, and I immediately fell in love. They were playing the Buggles' Video killed the radio star. I was turned on by the subliminally B&D images of the women in plexiglass tubes, the explosions, the funky beat of the music. And I couldn't stop watching. That same day they played Meatloaf's Paradise by the Dashboard Light, and I couldn't believe the sexual innuendo that even I at 12 could get. They were innovative and edgy. They introduced us to Stereo TV. They went 24-hours a day. They were the cutting edge on New Years, and they had the best contests ever.
What has happened to MTV?
Today they are one of the lamest channels on the dial. They rarely play videos any more. They spawned some extra channels that actually play videos, but it's lost its originality, its edge. The underground is now mainstream, thanks to MTV, and I fucking hate it. Because behind every sneer there is the gleam of a dollar. Behind every tittie flash is the lure of a Playboy layout. Behind every power chord is a limo driver ready to drive them home to their Appolinaris and milk baths. The music industry has gone downhill and I blame MTV. Once the RIAA started catering to MTV, and now today MTV is the RIAA's whore. It makes me wanna hurl.
I listen to college radio stations. I go to MP3.com and shop around for new bands. I can't base my listening pleasure on some dewdrop polished diamond in the rough bullshit on MTV. It doesn't take long for a brand new sound to become just another pop band. One band innovates the scene and the rest follow in the trail of green like lemmings to the cliffs of obscurity, until the music is unrecognizeable and even the innovators are lost in a wash of clones.
What is the point of this rant. Nothing. I'm just venting. But I'll be damned if I'm gonna let the music die like that. It's too precious for it to be bastardized by a bunch of money grubbing fuckers like MTV produces.
