"If the Doors or John Lennon were starting out today, the Industry wouldn't sign 'em in a million years. So what do we get? Government music." -Jello Biafra, Dead Kennedies, Triumph of the Swill, from Bedtime for Democracy

Interestingly enough, this line was released on the 1986 album "Bedtime for Democracy" and is still every bit as true today as it was 16 years ago.

May I ask what all the big hoopla is over getting a record deal? I'm not in a band, don't play any instruments and probably never will, so please--enlighten me. A lot of my favorite bands are all people who were local/underground, so I guess I don't understand what the big deal over a deal is.

Let's just say it's mighty hard for a band to survive without some sort of label backing them. Some of the better labels started out small, independent, and grew from nothing, like Metal Blade, Combat, and Alternative Tentacles. However, those labels are big these days, and getting signed by one of them ensures certain financial things that most bands can't afford on their own, like touring, recording (decent recording that is) and promotion on SNL, MTV, and the like. Basically, getting a record deal means making it, like being in a movie in Hollywood or something. And to you and me it may not seem too much, but it's a lot. A band can only go on for so long with no label backing, before they get worn out and tired of doing it with no tangible rewards. Eventually, the thrill of making music for its own sake gets old when you have to take a full time job just to pay the bills. Even the most dedicated can lose interest after a while.
