March 14th was the second week in a row that we played at the Ground Floor, and this time we were able to stick around for the whole show. Even though we were in the second slot, we went on first because there was no one booked in front of us. So we hit the stage at 6:45 and played, you guessed it, the same set we played the week before. People were BEGGING for "the dead baby song." So when Ode to Ed came up, I announced we were playing it (by name) and started playing. As soon as I sang Dead babies, the crowd erupted. It was awesome. Eventually, people may actually know the title of the song. Regardless, there was a lot of energy in the show, and I got to explore even more space with the wireless than I've done previously, running all the way to the back of the room at one point. We had a lot of fun and the audience reciprocated. All in all it was an excellent show.
Next up was a band from Gettysburg called Bombs Away. Near as I could tell, they were a Misfits tribute band. They were excellent, despite the fact that they were only a drummer and a guitarist, and the drummer was actually the bass player and not a drummer. He played pretty well for not being a drummer. They played quite a few songs, none of which I'd ever heard before (I'm not a big post-Danzig Misfits fan, but then again, they may have been originals), but all of which I really liked. Their stage presence was stiff and muted, but their performance was very good. The frontman even managed to keep playing with a straight face while being dry-humped by Drunk Dredlock Guy. More on that guy in a minute.
Next up was another Misfits tribute band, this one made up of drums, bass, guitar and vocals. They were called From the Grave, and in fact, their guitarist was the guitarist/vocalist from Bombs Away. Their sound being more rounded out by the bass, they certainly played an animated show, and their singer was excellent despite the fact that his microphone kept dropping out. Also, he got distracted from the performance when Drunk Dredlock Guy tryed to dry-hump him during the performance. But they were tight, and despite the guitarist having broken three strings (tying my all-time record for a single set), they were a solid act and one I'd certainly like to see again.
Last up on the bill was Buy Star Bombs, the two-piece outfit made up of Taxidermists members Brit and Joe (Guitar/vox and Drums respectively). They were excellent as they were the last two times we played with them (at our last two shows). To call them a White Stripes lookalike band would be a gross mischaracterization. They do have some Stripes-like qualities, being guitar-driven and blues-heavy in sound, and Brit having the stature and voice of Jack White. But Joe is a MUCH more accomplished drummer than Meg White is, and his playing adds a lot to the overall sound of the band. Keep an eye out on this band, they're heading places. And while you're waiting for their website to be completed, play the Pac-Man-esque video game that they have up on their site now.
Now, about Drunk Dredlock Guy. He spent a large portion of the show annoying people and pinching their asses (mostly guys, by the way). And at one point in the show (I can't remember if it was From the Grave or Buy Star Bombs who was up at the time), he got into a huge frackas in the Billiard room. I saw him walk into the room (which I couldn't see into from where I was sitting), and slowly, more and more people started heading into the room. It became apparent that there was a fight going on, but as such things don't concern me much, I ignored it. Let's just say, Drunk Dredlock Guy is welcome to come dryhump me any time. I think he added a lot to the show.
So there you have it. Our next performance (other than the WGLS show tomorrow night) is back at the Ground Floor on Sunday, March 21st. Make sure and come out, because (yay!) we're switching the setlist around, with different songs. But don't fret, we're still gonna do Ode to Ed.
You know, the Dead Baby Song.
