What an awesome show it was last night! For those of you who came out to see us, you were treated to the first ever acoustic set of Max the Dork, compliments of Tony's boss who wouldn't let him take the night off so he could play the show. All in all,it went well, considering we've never rehearsed an acoustic set before. It was also received well, and I think I even heard some people singing along during Eulogy. Also, the guys fom Syphin were on hand (mostly to check out Spenser) and they played some beats for us (on the tabletop) during Ode to Ed[/url]. We also played one of the most intense renditions of Condemn Nation that I can remember. The buildup was intense. Then after the show we handed out fliers and passed around the mailing list signup sheet. We added some 36 names to the list. However, some of the email addresses were very hard to read, so if you signed up last night and didn't get a confirmation email this morning, email me and I'll straighten it out.
The other four bands were awesome. Honest Disaster drove all the way down from Buffalo, NY, to play their New Jersey debut, and were very well received. They play with an energy not unlike Value & Quality, their music is very intense, and their set was tight as hell. I really enjoyed their set.
After MtD followed Honest Disaster, next up was The Hint from Washington, DC. Now, I've heard some of their music before, but nothing prepared me for their show. High energy and adept musicality drove the set by this three-piece band, and they certainly gained a new fan in me last night. It was different from the usual pool of "pop-punk" clones; it was original and fresh with a 70's-esque edge. I was truly impressed, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again soon.
After The Hint came Max Jones, a blues band from Kansas City. They were minus one drummer and one bass player, so I filled in on drums and the bass player from The Hint rounded out the ragtag band. Considering the fact that the four of us had never played together before (although I played a few songs with Max Jones last week), the set went off without a hitch - until Max broke a string and we had to end prematurely.
Which only gave some extra time to the show's headliner, Spenser, from Cleveland, OH. It's no secret that the droves of people (110 by my rough estimate) were out to see Spenser, and the crowd came alive during their set like I've never seen at The Brew before. There was a mosh pit that spanned the width of the club. I think Barbara is secretly pleased that I didn't jump into the pit; I coulda put some of those kids through the walls. Tame by normal punk standards, it's certainly the most exhuberant I've ever seen the crowd at Brenner's. Spenser played through an awesome set which started off with my personal favorite, Catcher. You know I'm not very impressed with Emo, but damn, there's something about that song that I just like.
All in all it was a helluva show. We had a great time, and we made some new fans. Our next show isn't until April 5th at Full Circle Records in Blackwood, NJ, but that one's a free show and we're the only band on the bill. The first regular MtD Newsletter will be out tomorrow (Volume 1, Issue 2) so those of you on the mailing list, look for that in your email. If you're not on the mailing list, you can still get on it by visiting our Contact Us Page. And like I said, if you signed up for the mailing list last night but didn't get a confirmation email today, go ahead and sign yourself up. I probably wasn't able to read your email. Also, sign the guestbook!!! That's what it's there for.
Later gators! ;D
