Sunday, November 17th, 2002, was a big day for Max the Dork. For the first time ever, I could stand on the stage and say "We're Max the Dork," and not look like I have multiple personalities. Yes, true believers, Sunday marked the very first performance of Max the Dork as a band. And what a performance it was. High energy, great response from the crowd. And let's talk about the crowd for a second. Yes, the show was a benefit concert for the family of Edwin Ray, and as such, there were tons of people there, more than had been at any MtD show previously. So it was fun to play in front of a packed house, even though the circumstances were perhaps a bit on the negative side.
Still, the show went great. JBG said it best when she remarked later that we didn't sound like a band that's been together for three weeks. Which was very very true. I have to hand it to Matt and Tony, they really picked up the material very quickly and very well. Even when we decided just an hour before the show that we'd have to drop Ode to Ed (because after all, the guy we were honoring was named Edwin, and we couldn't sing a song called Ode to Ed that was about dead babies and such!) and we would play About a Girl instead; with only one rehearsal of the song, it sounded like we'd planned it that way. It was all good.
We also sold quite a few CDs at the show, and managed to add $52 from the CD sales to the benefit fund for Edwin's family. And I have to tell you also, from the words of rememberance by the friends Edwin left behind, he sounded like a great guy. One person said it best: "I feel most sorry, not for the people whose lives he touched, not for the friends he left behind, but for the people who never got the priveledge of meeting and knowing Edwin."
Just so you know, our next show is on December 20th, and that one will be an explosive show. On the bill that night are Max the Dork, Syphin, and Value & Quality. It's gonna be the must-see show of the year, I can tell you. I'll post more about the show when it gets nearer.
In the meantime, thanks to all who came out on Sunday, and I hope you had a good time. It seemed like people were really getting into the show, and many of the Dork Brigadeers who came up after the show said that the band sounded great. I couldn't agree more. And I think we'll sound even better at the next show. See you then! ;D
