Are you an altruistic person? Do you sacrifice your self for the benefit of others? Or are you "selfish" by modern standards; do you first look after yourself and your own interests?
Altruism is nothing more than a stepping stone on the path to socialism and collectivism. Once you sacrifice your own self interests to benefit the greater good, you are on the way to destroying your own individuality. After all, what good is desire when it is subjugated by the need to aid the collective?

I don't expect anyone to sacrifice themselves to me, and so I don't sacrifice myself to anyone else. My interests then would certainly be construed as strictly selfish.
Altruism is OK as long as it's a personal choice. As soon as it's imposed or expected, then it is one's individuality that is sacrificed for the "greater good" - in other words, collectivism or socialism by law.
