Rene Descartes penned this latin phrase, which translated means "I Think, therefore I am," four hundred years ago in the Age of Enlightenment. At the time, Descartes, a philosopher and student of Logics, decided that he would build his philosophy by denying everything and then proving everything to himself through logic. The first thing he denied was his own existence, but he found that he could not disprove his existence by logical means, and thus began his journey of discovery with the phrase Cogito, Ergo sum, or as he would have said in French, Je ponce, dans je suis.

Since Rene Descartes died in 1650 doesn't this make his entire argument null and void?
murtuus est, irtaque ne exsistet.
or in french il est mort, donc il n'est pas.
And by the way, I love the cock!
I love to eat the cock. I have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Cock is so tasty. I need to eat some tasty balls.
I want the cock. I need the cock.

Some people believe that consciousness does not end when the body expires, that there is a Heaven, or some sort of lifeforce gathering, or perhaps the "soul" is recycled and reborn in a new body. Others may believe that when one dies in the three (or four, whatever your viewpoint is) dimensional universe, that our consciousness passes to a higher plane of existence, an extradimensional plane. Still others believe that when the body dies, so does the conscious existence of the body. And then there are those who believe that when the body dies, in the final second before the brain winks out of consciousness, the brain deludes itself into thinking that a second is a year, a millisecond a decade, a nanosecond an eternity, and so the consciousness never believes it dies, it merely falls into a tiny state of illusion whereby it believes it is living forever.
Whichever of these you believe, I believe that you must take your arguement up with Rene. He's the only one who can truly answer your question.

[glow=green,2,300]i think when we die, we die... our bodies die, anyway.. but our souls live on searching for the other part of ourselves.. our soul mate ... i was lucky in this life to have found him.. and when we die, we get the pleasure of finding one another all over again... but i guess that's a bit off topic... gushing over my love for max.[/glow]

This is quite an interesting debate. There are shools of philosophy (mainly Eastern and Qabalistic) which beleive true consciousness transcends thought... that thought is merely a means by which our puny physical brains attempt to sort things out. There is a metaphor I like on this topic... consciousness is like a lake. There are huge glaciers moving across the surface with small peices breaking off (thoughts) and disturbing the water. The only way to attain true consciousness is to still these thoughts so the surface of the water is clear.

So Descartes would have been more correct in saying: "I think, therefore I am not conscious?"
That's quite an interesting metaphor. For those of you saying "What's a metaphor?" let me say, nothing, what's a metaphor you?
Sorry, bad joke.

Let this be a lesson to you all. Don't think you can just pop onto the board, post one thing, and then pop off never to be heard from again. Otherwise, the moderators may "edit" your post a bit. ;D
