Let's have a war so you can go and die - Fear
Last night at The Saint, one of the bands said they had a big "fuck you" for anyone against the war in Iraq.
That's cool.
I mean, if there's anything this country stands for, it's the freedom to express whatever opinions you may have. Unfettered freedom of speech is one of the things that makes this country great. And that's why when I got up on stage, I said that I had a big "fuck you" to the people who said "fuck you" to the people against the war in Iraq. Which is just a big confusing way of saying that yes, I'm against the war.
A lot of people had issue with my statement. It seems like there was quite a lot of people who cheered for the first "fuck you" and jeered my later "fuck you." That's OK also. But my question for those people is this: If you're so for the war in Iraq, then why are you in a club in Asbury Park, NJ on a Sunday night, instead of actually in Iraq, fighting this war you so want to happen?
Oh sure, it's easy to support the war effort from home. It's so easy to say "Oh yes, we should be at war with Iraq," when it's not your keister on the front line getting shot at. It's not YOUR life that's being spent at the cost of defending...what exactly? We don't even know. All we know is what the war mongers in DC want us to think they know, which boils down to not a whole lot. I agree that the Iraqi's could be more proactive and cooperative with the UN weapons inspectors. I agree that they may be hiding stuff. But is the danger great enough that we need to send 18 year old boys to die in the sand? I don't think so. Violence is the last resort of the incompetent. If the situation can't be solved diplomatically, then let's enforce a trade embargo on Iraq, lay seige on their country and starve them out into the open. The people of Iraq don't need much goading to overthrow their government, not when they've suffered with poverty and destitution for the past decade under the present regime. Shut down their lifelines and you're looking at a repeat of the French Bastille Day.
What I'm saying is, why is everyone frothing at the crotch for this war? And why are those most vocal for war staying at home? If you feel that strongly, sign up and go fight! But my point is that there are other resolutions to this standoff. There are always non-violent resolutions to impasses such as this one. Those who think that there is no other recourse just haven't spent enough time thinking it through. But those people seem to have no problem committing soldiers to die in a war, as long as they are not one of the soldiers themselves. Put yourself on the battlefield and ask yourself if war is the only solution, and you may have a different answer.
