From an internal memo distributed by the FAA:
A LITTLE DAB'LL DO YOU: If you plan to set off fireworks on the Fourth of July, be forewarned: this may delay you later at the airport. If this has you puzzled, stay with us. There is a method to our seeming madness.
The New York Times reported this week that ultra-sensitive equipment, called trace detection systems, can detect minuscule traces of explosives on suitcase and skin. And these traces might raise suspicions at the security checkpoints at airports and delay your boarding. So, if you spend the 4th out of town and there are fireworks involved, keep your luggage out of way and scrub yourself down before you head for the airport to fly back home.

How should I know? I just work at the FAA, I don't write the memos!
