I'm boycotting racism.
I don't get ethnic jokes. I think they're very dull and not funny. When someone tells me an ethnic joke, I just shake my head. Perhaps I don't have a very good sense of humor, or perhaps I find it sad that someone needs to put down someone else to feel better about themselves.
I don't get White/Black Supremacy groups. I'd much rather see a Human Supremacy group. I think that would be much more apropos, especially since we are, by and large, at the tippy top of the foodchain. But as the dinosaurs learned, that can change very quickly. The thing I don't understand about White/Black Supremacy groups is that they spend more time telling us why other people are so worthless, rather than telling us why they are so supreme. It's like a bad political race, full of mud slinging, no one wanting to discuss the real issues.
I don't understand violence as retaliation for non-violence. I don't see why we, as Human Beings, after tens of thousands of years of civilization and evolution, still feel that the best response to a verbal challenge is a punch in the nose. It seems to me that the human intellect is declining, not advancing - at least it seems that way if the last fifty years are any indication.
So I'm boycotting racism. When someone approaches me with a racist joke, comment, slur, what-have-you, I will merely state that I don't find it funny and walk away. When I see a group voicing their opposition to another group based on their ethnicity or their genetic background, I will tell them quietly that I disagree and join the other side. When I see anyone, anywhere, being judged based on the color of their skin, whether they are white, black, brown, yellow, green, red, blue or purple, I will strive that much harder to judge them based on their character.
We are not defined by the color of our skin. We are not defined by the build of our bodies. We are not defined by the affluence of our ancestry. We are not defined by our language or our accents.
As Human Beings, we are each and every one of us defined individually by the character of our being, by the way we act and the way we treat others, by the things we do and the things we say. If I truly want to end racism, it has to begin with me, by my actions, by the way I treat others. I cannot make others change, but I can make others change the way they think about me, by being the best Human Being that I can be.
