*** Spoilers, for you TiVo people ***
Here's my thoughts on it. Earlier this season, Tony and Bobby were sitting in a boat talking about death. Tony said that when the hit comes, you probably don't even know it, everything just turns black.
Some people have used that line to theorize that Tony was whacked and that's what the sudden black screen symbolized. I think it's a deeper, breaking of the fourth wall kind of meaning. I think the sudden black screen and silence during the ending credits were the AUDIENCE getting whacked, or the SHOW getting whacked. You don't know it's over, it's just suddenly...black.
That's my thoughts. The more I think about it, the more I like it.
However, lots of mixed reaction on the radio today. And almost to a person, it seems like everyone watching had the same immediate reaction that we did: that the cable went out. A couple people called in and said they actually went over to the cable box and hit it. Angelo Cataldi said it may have been the most people ever to collectively say "What the fuck?" Even moreso than Lost, I think.
By the way, the scene where Phil gets hit, maybe the most gruesome hit scene ever, even without having shown the actual crushing of his head. There was a slight bloating of his face as the wheel made contact with his head, and then the popping/crushing sound, and the guys watching and cringing, the one guy puking...great scene, and an all-around satisfying end to Phil Leotardo.
