Well, it's been over a month now since Frank Colborn (yep, that's his last name) joined our little band's rhythm section, and I gotta tell ya, the chemistry right now is awesome. Our performances have been energetic and loose, we've just been having a lot of fun together. Witness the short film we put together after our Asbury Park show - Max the Dork Goes to White Casul. The kind of fun we had in making it, and just our general sense of humor, is reflected in our performance. We've even written a few more songs since Frank joined the band, and the general consensus (meaning feedback we get from our fans at shows) is that Duality in particular is one of our best songs yet. I have to agree, and with Frank's unrelenting pounding behind us it's also one of the more fun songs to play. I was telling Frank last Saturday at rehearsal that in the past, Justin and I used to drive the drummer, and now Frank is driving us. Which is how it ought to be.
Anyway, so we've had three shows as a band now. The most recent one was an unscheduled last-minute show in Jenkintown, PA at a place called Valley Billiards. We went on first, at 2:00 AM! I guess the idea was that when the bars closed, the drunks would wander over and play pool. Well, that worked fairly well. We also played with a band called Something in the Water, comprised of members of Alien 8 and Mourning Electra. They were a lot of fun, and gave us a warm response in addition to playing a really good set themselves.
One last thing going on right now is that independent filmmaker Joe Steinhart (who used Justin and I as actors in his film Cross Country last Summer) is currently filming a documentary about Max the Dork. He came by rehearsal last Saturday and also filmed some of the show on Saturday night (or Sunday morning, really). He'll also be dropping by for more interviews and filming this weekend. As the subject of a documentary (or dorkumentary), Max the Dork may not be Spinal Tap, but at least we don't take ourselves too seriously.
So that's what's going on right now. Keep an eye out for new pictures from recent shows, and a couple new live performance videos to go with our short film. And stay uncool.
