Crapital Punishment/Cunning Linguist cover contests
Well the results are in. I realize that I've kept you all in the dark for quite some time, and for that I'm sorry. However, the deliberation process was not an easy one. All of the contest entries were so good, and any one of them I would be happy to use on my album covers, that it was a very difficult decision. However, as they say in Highlander, there can be only one. Or in this case, two. So without further ado, here are the winning album covers, and both of them come from the same artist: James Marshall of Burlington, NJ.
Crapital Punishment
Cunning Linguist
Like I said, this was an extremely difficult decision to make. There were a ton of really good entries, both drawn and photoshopped. In fact, two of the very close runners-up to the Crapital Punishment contest were photoshopped. Sometime this coming week I'll be publishing a page with all the contest entries on it, and their respective artists' names. Everybody did a great job, and I am really impressed with your artistic talent.
I think the deciding factor in choosing James' work was twofold: first of all, it is original and humorous, very important qualities in a Punk album cover, especially one by MtD. Second, the style in the two is very similar, and I liked how there was continuity between the two. To be honest, there were far less Cunning Linguist entries than Crapital Punishment entries, and James' was certainly the best of those hands down. But after all, what to do with a live album cover? His reminded me a bit of the Rush Exit Stage Left album cover, and maybe that tainted my decision a bit. But once I picked that album cover, the decision for the Crapital Punishment cover became a bit easier. Now, some people might not think that it's fair that the same person won both contests, but hey, it's my album cover, so it's ultimately my decision and I stand by it wholeheartedly.
So the next step is for James to get me color versions of these. I think he was afraid to do that, because he was afraid he wouldn't win, and James, I'm sorry I kept you in the dark for so long, but that was part of the contest also.
Thanks for everyone who entered, and congratulations to James Marshall. ;D
